3rd Generation Alaskan Commercial Fishermen - Live Season Updat

Posted By Thomas Lopez     May 2, 2012

Body

Hey everyone!! I am a 3rd generation commercial fisherman in Valdez, Alaska and me my brother brother own 4 boats and permits within the Seine Fishery. In anticipation for a production crew coming aboard this summer, we have developed both a Facebook facebook.com/lopezfisheries and a website (Lopez Fisheries), with family history, apparel, videos, pictures, and blog posts where we can be followed in real time, now and all summer long. Hope to see you there, should be very exciting. THANKS!

Here are 1 of our current blog post:

Well, here we are again, even closer to fishing season.  The anticipation is getting killer, as it usually does around this time.  I was packing today as I know I’ll have quite the week ahead of me before I leave and don’t want to be doing that the night before, and realized how empty my big duffle bag was..again.

T-shirts; check.  Hoodies; check. Carhartts; check. Sock and undies; check.  And thats it, I’m packed….. for 4 months.   It’s quite interesting how limited my clothing selection gets during the season, along with most everything else.  From what I wear on the day to day, to whats for lunch, and what to do to fill my time after the long workday, the options become quite simple.  And I expect it to become even more simple as we have so much Lopez Fisheries Gear this season.

As far as clothing is concerned a typical day begins with getting up, praying to find some fresh undies, throwing on the same work pants from the day before, giving the t-shirts the “smell test” to determine what’ll pass as “clean”, and a light jacket.  The most variation I see in clothing is whether I’m feeling extra edgy and want to wear my “nice shoes”(2 year old Nike Tennis shoes) that day.  Although this may seem a bit odd to some, it’s actually quite refreshing.  Compared to “real life” where pesky things like morning showers, face washes, and a combs are concerned the simplicity is great.  I can literally tell you my outfit every day for the next 4 months without fail. :)

So until then I’ll be using my days to soak up as much sun as possible, shower daily, and probably comb my hair.  Until next time.  Captain Thomas
