For years I've met folks out fishing in my part of Alaska from all over the World , just about all of them looking for advice on where and when to fish . I've often sat and thought of how someone could have a super time with out spending their children's inheritance doing so.

Here then is what I would do if it were me :

I would take about three weeks off and get a cheep round trip ticket to anchorage and book a rental car , then once I arrived grab the rental car or van and head over to one of the local supper box stores to outfit myself for the coming adventure. I'd get a cheep cooler , a cheep tent , some waders and a fishing pole and tackle and sleeping bags, all for about 300 bucks max. Then hit the grocery store for some grub . I'd pick up a fishing map , the stores all have them , most of the maps have all the road accessible creeks and rivers marked on them. Don't forget to purchase a fishing license as well.

I would camp out at the creeks or near them, just about all the fishing spots have camp grounds, then every few days I'd grab a motel room to clean up in and get off the ground for a night .

At the end of my adventure I would visit one of the charities like the Salvation Army and donate my slightly used gear to them , turn in my rental car at the airport and grab my return flight home.

Of course if you want to be very successful with this method you got to plan your trip around the know Salmon runs , that where a little research at the department of fish and game comes in: check out their web site http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=fishing.main . You can use it to plan your trips and target your species of fish your after. They have historic data on all the fish runs to help you time your trip . No sense going if your too early or too late for the run of fish your after.
