Longer butt type rods are used for casting tournaments and distance beach fishing all right but in general they are in the minority. They also tend to be beasts!! The reel is a Diawa 7ht mag, the dial is the mag ajustment. The sl30sh is a great reel and super caster too. Its not an ulitimate distance reel like the 7ht but still pretty good. I used to use one for winter cod off the beach in rough weather.

If you seriously want a great tournament Rod,... moreMost of the rods we use Rob are between 13-14 ft, but rarely any more, most often ZZiplex's, but Century blanks also and a handful of other makes such as Harrison. Mostly ZZiplex's because they are the best. If you seriously want a great tournament Rod, which will also make a cracking fishing rod, light but powerful, ZZiplex is your man. You really need to go low reel though to properly utilize these rods but a couple hours practice will sort that out and the advantages are immediately obvious.
