Fishing Tips: The Norwegian cod jig is our go-to jig for big lingcod and groundfish. We are using 21 and 27oz jigs to get down 100-200' and fish the drop off ledges of reef structure for monster lingcod and red snapper. These jigs can reach bottom fast and remain vertical beneath the boat while drifting with moderate winds or currents.
We are fishing the jigs with penn330Gti reels, 80lb tuff line, and ugly stick rods.
The best technique is to lower the jig to the bottom, reel up a few turns quickly to avoid snagging bottom, then jig aggressively.
More often than not the lingcod will strike the lure as its falling, on its initial drop, as soon as it reaches the bottom.
A firm hookset is recommended. The fish often bite the lure body so the firm hookset will ensure the hooks stick.
